NOTES FROM THE WORKBENCH

A six-sided box for a small gift

A six-sided package has two useful widths. Choose the one that actually limits the object before selecting the side length.

Name the width you mean

For a regular hexagon, across corners is twice the side length. Across flats is the side length multiplied by √3. With a 25 mm side, these values are 50 mm and about 43.30 mm respectively.

Calling either one the diameter without a definition creates an avoidable mistake. A round object must clear the flats; the wider corners do not help a circular section fit between them.

Compare a section before a volume

Place the object's cross-section inside a paper hexagon of the intended size. Rotate an irregular object to find a useful orientation, but keep the removal path in mind. A tight fit that requires a precise rotation every time may be inconvenient.

The tool uses fold-line measurements for this prism. Paper thickness, creases and joining tabs can reduce the usable interior. Treat the section sketch as a planning step and the assembled model as the practical fit check.

Keep the band regular

Six equal 25 mm side panels and a 10 mm seam tab form a 160 mm-wide band. Score the walls carefully and bring the seam together without stretching one face or flattening another. Check opposite faces before closing the ends.

Fold the end tabs inward and seat the hexagonal face evenly. A slightly skewed band can make the last corner appear wrong even when all six side spans were generated equally.

Test presentation and removal

After the joins settle, place the gift inside and try the intended opening. Check whether wrapping or a ribbon changes the section you measured. Do not assume the unwrapped object is the final packed size.

Save the project with its side length and material notes. The resulting paper model can help you assess appearance and access; it does not establish a load rating, postal suitability or performance in another material.
